Daily Events for the Week of 16-20

Non-Perishable Food/Toiletries Drive (12pm - 7pm)
Stop! Drop! And Help! Treat the symptoms of Homelessness We are holding a campus-wide can and toiletries drive to collect as many items as possible to package and distribute to those in need this season. Collection bins will be set up in high-traffic areas so students, faculty, and staff can drop off canned goods, non-perishables, and basic hygienic items. Next time you stop off for groceries, pick up an extra can or two! Every donation is much appreciated and will go a long way.

Look for collection bins in your residence hall, at Hillel or in the Stamp.




Sunday (November 15)

Veronica House
A shelter that offers long-term care for women with psychosocial and medical conditions needs your help! Join Tzedek, a social justice group, as they finish painting the bedrooms at Veronica House. Contact Jonathan at berlin.jon@gmail.com to sign up or for any further questions.




Monday (November 16)

3:00pm - Homelessness 101 (Stamp Student Union - Juan Jimenez Room)
Homelessness is not a problem; it is a symptom of many more complex problems such as disability, addiction, economic struggles, domestic violence, and more. Learn how public policy and public opinion on these issues converged to create a homelessness problem in the United States in the first place. Find out what can be done about it now. Join Andrea Morris, of the College of Chemical and Life Sciences for a discussion on the many facets of homelessness.

5:30pm - Hunger and Homelessness: How can I help? (KEY 0103)
Come listen to Speakers from Rotary International District 7620, Capital Area Food Bank, and Engineers without Borders as they present the issues facing those who are hungry or homeless. Each speaker will explain how he or she has been involved in helping those who are hungry and homeless and will provide the audience with ways to become involved in helping to improve and ultimate end these problems, both locally and globally.

6:30pm - Film Documentary Empress Hotel (Bioscience Research Building Seminar Room 1103)
This documentary is a showcase of ten different residents of the Empress Hotel, a housing program for formerly homeless individuals in San Francisco'as Tenderloin area. Learn of the resident's backgrounds, symptoms, and life experiences that have resulted in their homelessness and eventual residency in this unit.  Be moved as the residents try to get on their feet once again.

Join Hillel and help prepare food for individuals with terminal illnesses. All students are welcome, show up at Hillel if interested. No tank tops. E-mail Marissa at mneuman@hillelmd.org to RSVP for the event.

11:45am - Help the Homeless - Hands On!
(Meet at STAMP near busstop)- Return by 3:45
Come feed the hungry at local soup kitchen and food distribution centers! The Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week team is sponsoring a volunteer trip to Bread for the City whose goal is to provide warm, nutritious meals to people in need! November 15th is the start of the national Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week. Do your part to make a difference in someone's life, learn about homelessness first hand - and have fun! Please contact Daria Murosko at dmurosko@umd.edu if you want to sign up. Spaces are limited!

6:30pm - Faces of Homelessness - (Stamp Student Union - Atrium)
Sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless, The Faces of Homelessness Panel brings homeless or past-homeless individuals to speak about the issues that experiences of being homeless. The public speaking event has spoke to over 350 groups and provide real experts on homeless issues, supporting the fight to end homelessness.

Sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega & Oxfam, come join our Hunger Banquet to raise awareness to those who are hungry across the world. Learn more about how many people face hunger, types of hunger, and ways to address hunger in the United States and the world. Food is provided.

8:00pm - 9:00pm - Bagging (Challah for Hunger) - Hillel
Join Hillel and help braid and bag Challah. The Challah is sold to raise profits (50% of which goes to Darfur/Sudan relief, and 40% going to a Hunger and Homelessness non-profit) All students are welcome! E-mail Marissa at mneuman@hillelmd.org to RSVP for the event.




Saturday (November 21)

National Homelessness Walk - 6:00am breakfast, 7:30 registration, 9:00am walk
The Help the Homeless Walkathon is a walk held in Washington DC in order to raise money to combat homelessness. The walk is five kilometers starting on the mall and circling around through the surrounding area. T-shirts are provided to those participants who register. Participants will be meeting outside The STAMP near the bus stops at 6:30am before the walkathon for a small breakfast with bagels.

Transportation will be provided between the STAMP and the College Park Metro until 7:15. We will be using the metro to get to the mall, so bring your smartcards/paper passes.

Habitat for Humanity - 7:45am - Meet outside Hoff entrance of Union
Join Habitat for Humanity in a build trip to Baltimore. Contact John Joyce at iwanttobuild@umdhabitat.org for more information. Weekly meetings are held on Mondays at 6:00pm in JMZ0105. RSVP is required
