Service Opportunities for Majors in
HEALTH & HUMAN
PERFORMANCE
Community service involves applying your energy, enthusiasm,
skills, and desire to make a difference to social issues that
concern you. It is an excellent way to gain hands-on experience,
enhance job-related skills, explore career options, and meet
real community needs. The following are just a few examples
of how you can get involved in service related to majors in
health and human performance:
· FAMILY STUDIES:
Volunteer with a family assistance program; volunteer at a
family planning agency; help out at a
Family emergency shelter or a shelter for battered women;
organize family activities for your church,
synagogue or temple; lobby on behalf of family issues and
rights.
· HEALTH EDUCATION:
Volunteer with the Department of Public Health; become a peer
educator at the Health Center; Volunteer at non-profit health
organizations; help a school district create health curricula;
participate in health-related fundraisers (i.e. walk-a-thons,
bike-a-thons).
· KINESIOLOGICAL SCIENCES:
Present health and fitness programs in your community; volunteer
at a clinic for people with physical
disabilities; Help with Special Olympics.
· PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
Be a physical education teacher aid; teach aerobics; spend
the summer as a camp counselor; be a coach for a team sport
league in your community.

Community Bridges: Jump Start Girls!

Dedicated to early adolescent empowerment and leadership development.
Works with at-risk girls grades 9-12 using arts, sports, outdoor
education, conflict resolution, peer mentoring, mother-daughter
communication, and community action projects.

DC scores is a youth development, after school and summer
program, using soccer and creative writing as tools. We implement
a fall and spring soccer season, and many special events.
Practices are twice a week, games on Thursday, and writing
the other two days.

Provides hands-on experience for those interested in the health

University Health Center

Students have the opportunity to volunteer in several areas
including: pharmacy, dental health, women’s health,
primary care, physical therapy, laboratory, and health education.
Volunteers are accepted at the beginning of each semester,
each volunteer is expected to commit a minimum of 2-4 hours
a week.

Provides health care to the local uninsured community. Volunteers
provide lay health work with men's, women's, prenatal, HIV/aids
testing, general medicine and pediatric clinics. Spanish/English
interpreters, patient advocates and health educators.
